Spouse Open Work Permit

The Open Work Permit is a type of work permit that allows the applicant to work for any employer in Canada, with some exceptions.

Many of our clients, when preparing to submit their applications, ask us if they can bring a spouse or family member with them. And our answer, in most cases, is yes!

They may be considered eligible for an Open Work Permit if they are:

  • A spouse of a skilled worker in an occupation under the the National Occupational Classification (NOC) TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 approved to work in Canada six months or longer; or
  • A spouse of a foreign student at a public post-secondary institution.

For the second option, it is important to mention that the students are required to demonstrate they have the financial resources to support themselves (as a student) and their family members.

In both cases, you will also be required to prove your relationship is valid and genuine, especially if it is a recent marriage.

We understand that it can be difficult, time consuming, and overwhelming to put together a Spouse Open Work Permit application making sure all the requirements are met and that you don't forget any documents.
